Queenstown

As a lot of people know, Queenstown is the centre for New Zealand's adrenalin-packed activities including bungee, sky-diving, rafting etc. So, guess what we decided to do?

Yep, climb a mountain! Admittedly, we used the gondola to do the first 500m up (and back down again) but it was still a 1000m climb! Our legs are getting a bit fed up with us... As you'll see from the photos, it was well worth it for the view.

We managed about an hour in central Queenstown, for tea and cake, but we soon came back to our out-of-town base.

We've relented though. Jetboating in Shotover Canyon tomorrow morning!

  1. Towns serve the useful purpose of reminding us how nice it is not being in them, don't they.

Out here, last night was an absolutely exceptional telescope night. Neither humid nor windy, not toooo cold, amazingly clear, good seeing conditions and a thin moon that obligingly set fairly early. Oh, and before it did so, Venus and Mars almost in a line (Venus is the closer one) - well worth a look if they're up and about at a suitable time Down There. It was possible to resolve some shape and structure to Little Dumbell, for example. Marvellous. Also, Robbie's Galaxy is well placed for seeing, but I'm not quite sure I was looking at the right bit of sky, quite: there are two patterns of stars at different scales and magnitudes, both in the right direction and both the same sort of configuration as those on the map, next to the Galaxy. Whisky, seeping cold and waiting dinner meant I didn't have the energy to work out orientation and angular size, to confirm which I should be looking at. Ho hum - it'll be there for a while!
