Well, blue glacial lakes have probably caused more comments than anything else on this blog, so imagine how pleased we were to find a sign to "The Blue Lakes" whilst stretching our legs after the long drive.
We raced around the corner, and snapped the photo for you.
Yes, we were as disappointed as you. The path was being maintained, and it only went to the lakes (or as we fondly think of them, stagnant pools), so we figured that maybe the lakes were blue in the spring when the meltwater flows into them. Once the snowmelt stops, the lakes must warm up and algea turns them green and murky.
ReplyDeleteNot so. The lakes were last blue in 1890, but then the recession of the Tasman glacier has meant that the lakes are no longer ever filled by the magical blue glacial meltwater.
Other people who were disappointed were two girls who stopped us by the stagnant pool and said "Are the Blue Lakes this way?"
The Lakes formerly known as "Blue".
