Ok, so we're crap at relaxing

We arrived yesterday in St Arnaud a little tired as a result of the long drive and the cumulative effect of doing quite a lot of stuff recently.

So we decided to stay here for an extra night to give ourselves a break from driving, and to just chill a bit.

Unfortunately, St Arnaud has a 1800m hill with reportedly good views from the top, so we went up there, arriving back at 6, thoroughly knackered.

We need to work on our relaxation techniques!

Next stop tomorrow is the Abel Tasman national park, and we have a plan. We are going to stop at the 1st supermarket that we get to and buy wine! That (or at least the consumption of it) should keep us off the high peaks!

Not only was this plan ratified by Hannah, she even suggested it!

We'll keep you posted.

In the meantime, here are some pics from the St Arnaud range.

  1. Good gracious: that looks absolutely fantastic, and the scenery is somehow very different from Europe. I wonder why? Samuel?

They tell me Villa Maria make some quite drinkable stuff... And as the best NZ stuff is white, it doesn't count!

  2. It's certainly very pretty. What particular differences were you getting at, exactly?

  3. Possibly because in New Zealand, schist happens...

(sorry the bad pun was on a sign in Mount Aspiring... I don't even know whether this is Schist)

On a geological theme, something that might interest Samuel is that the mountains on the east coast, near Kaikoura, are uplifting by 10mm per year. As our kayak guide told us, 10mm is approximately a centimetre.

  4. It is a tectonically-active zone - I'd have been surprised if there wasn't some ongoing uplift somewhere.

Still not faster than sea-level rise....
