Today we went to an exciting cave. It was a bit of a steep climb but well worth it to see the phytokarst formations. These are what you get when you mix stalactites with moss and ferns. You end up with stalactites that grow towards the light. We took some pictures of the science for you.
We then headed over to the sun-kissed beaches of the Abel Tasman national park for a short wander.
The evening finds us in Nelson where there are plenty of old buildings. We'll do some more exploring tomorrow.
Well I never - haven't heard of those before. Phyto obv. light; karst presumably from the Gloucestershire for cast. Another bit of Forest of Dean heredity?
ReplyDeleteI like to think of them as non-gravitatationally-dominated stalactites. Some of them were almost horizontal!
ReplyDeleteTHE CAVES ARE ALIVE WITH THE SOUND OF MOSSES.
ReplyDeleteThe terrible horror remake of The Sound of Music....
Good old limestone - karst landscapes do the weirdest things.
